MONTEREY SELECT BOARD
MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF FEBRUARY 28, 2005
The regular weekly meeting of the Monterey Select Board was opened at 8:30 a.m. with members Jonathan Sylbert (Chair), Michèle Miller, and Michael Storch all present.
In attendance for the meeting: Laurily Epstein of the Monterey News
· The Board declared a snow emergency since the Town has exhausted its snow budget for the year.
· The Board met with Director of Operations Maynard Forbes to review Highway Department items. Forbes reported problems with the Mack truck and the new 550 truck, which has been recalled.
· Fire Chief Ray Tryon was present to inform the Board that he denied having stated that emergency vehicles could not pass a muddy section of Beartown Mountain Road, as stated by Hillel Maximon and recorded in the Minutes of February 14, 2005. The Board requested that the Monterey News print a correction to this effect in its March issue. In another matter, the Board discussed with Tryon the Fire Department’s annual $5,000 compensation and why it is still necessary. Tryon indicated he would provide written documentation to the Board that substantiates the continuance and real purpose of this funding.
· The Board met with School Representative Rick Mielke. Mielke suggested that the Town set up an independent educational committee of approximately five to seven members to research the quality of education in the district and to determine why there is so much diversity in school choice. He also suggested that if there was additional money for the district this year, that the schools should look into providing advanced programs such as engineering, woodworking, advanced theater, etc. It was determined that as the Town looks to the end of its capital agreement with the school district, perhaps other options could be explored for the educational
purposes of the Town’s portion of this funding, such as perhaps providing some type of educational or resource center.
· The Board met with Stanley Ross, chair of the Finance Committee, to discuss budgetary items.
· Highway and Treasury Warrants were signed.
· The clerk was given instructions regarding correspondence.
· It was unanimously voted that the meeting be adjourned (12 noon).
